Each year in the UNITED STATES 100,000.00 people lose their lives to addiction, that’s two hundred and seventy-four people a day. Four out of five people in the U.S are directly or indirectly impacted by the disease of addiction, yet because of shame and stigma attached to the disease, many people are reluctant to seek out help for fear of being labeled as failures by society.
Substance abuse is not a moral failing, but a disease that ingulfs all the lives that touch the suffers.
If a person suffers from cancer, all are sorry, no one is angry or hurt, but not so for the alcoholic or addict, for with it there goes annihilation of all things worthwhile in life. It brings misunderstanding, fierce resentment, financial insecurity, disgusted wives, husbands and employers, warped lives, blameless children, sad wives, and parents- anyone can increase the list.
The good news is substance abuse is treatable. Unfortunately, those who are ready to take the necessary action to get help and seek out treatment are handicapped by financial ruin or have no family support whatsoever. Many who are in this class will die, simply because they do not have the financial resources or necessary insurance to receive treatment.
